How to Play "Four on a Couch"
If you’re looking for a lively indoor party game to engage a large group, look no further than Four on a Couch! This fun and interactive game is perfect for gatherings with friends or family, ensuring everyone gets involved. Here’s everything you need to know to set up and play.
Objective
Be the first team to get four members onto The Couch!
What You'll Need
Before you gather your crew, make sure you have the following materials ready:
A four-seater couch (this will be your focal point)
Seating for each participant, along with one extra seat
Pieces of paper (one for each player)
Writing utensils (pens or pencils)
A bowl to hold the folded pieces of paper
Setting Up the Game
Designate The Couch: Choose a four-seater couch that will serve as The Couch for the game.
Divide into Teams: Split the players into two even teams. You can do this by gender or any other method if the gender ratio is uneven.
Arrange Participants: Have everyone sit in a circle, alternating between team members. This ensures a balanced game.
Prepare The Couch: Make sure that all four spots on The Couch are filled with two members from each team sitting in alternating seats. Leave the seat directly to the left of The Couch empty.
Distributing Identities: Give each player a piece of paper and a writing utensil. Ask everyone to write their name on a piece of paper, fold it, and place it in the bowl.
Draw Identities: Pass the bowl around the circle so that each player can draw a folded piece of paper. Each player must keep their “new name” a secret from the others.
How to Play
Starting the Game: The player who sits to the right of the empty seat begins the game. This player will call out the name of someone else in the circle.
Switching Seats: If the player whose name has been called is sitting in the circle, they must get up and move to the empty seat. For instance, if "Josh" is called, the person who drew "Josh" stands up and takes the empty seat.
Identity Dynamics: The real "Josh" remains seated unless his identity is called. The game continues with the next player sitting to the right of the newly empty seat taking their turn.
Game Flow Rules: Players cannot call the same name twice in a row, nor can they call out their own identity. However, players can call out their name if they are not the person behind that name.
Winning the Game: The game continues until one team successfully fills all four seats on The Couch. That team is declared the winner!
Tips for a Great Game
Encourage creativity! Players can strategize their calls to keep the game engaging.
Keep track of the names you’ve called to avoid confusion.
Consider playing multiple rounds to get everyone involved as identities shift.
"Four on a Couch" guarantees lots of laughs and unexpected fun. With simple rules and a focus on interaction, it’s a fantastic way to break the ice and create lasting memories.
Gather your friends, set up The Couch, and let the fun begin! Happy playing!
